Implants are prosthetic devices used to replace a missing tooth. They are made from three parts; the post, which screws into the jawbone to simulate the function of a tooth root; the abutment which holds the crown in place; and the dental crown, which is the visible part of the implant which looks like a natural tooth.
Each part of the implant is made from different materials. For example, while the post and abutment are generally made from titanium, the crown can be made of porcelain or a composite resin material that matches the color of natural teeth.
As with most dental restorations, implants will last longer the better care you take for them. The post and abutment can last for many years; in fact, those components can last a lifetime unless there’s a significant injury. As far as the crown, however, it can last anywhere from 10 to 15 years before needing to be replaced.
Dental implants are durable and practical restorations, ideally suited to give you back the smile you thought you had lost. If you want to learn more about dental implants, call City Dental of Wellington today for a consultation!
